PARMALAT GETS NEW DEADLINE TO EMERGE FROM BANKRUPTCY

The General Electric Capital Corporation and Citigroup Inc. gave the United States unit of Parmalat Finanziaria, Italy's biggest food company, two more weeks to file a plan to leave bankruptcy and avoid default. The unit, Parmalat USA Corporation, has until Sept. 30 to file the plan and until Dec. 31 to win court confirmation, the company said in papers filed with the United States Bankruptcy Court in New York. The filing deadline had been yesterday. ''The company is trying hard to meet the new deadline, but can't guarantee it will,'' said Stephen B. Selbst, Parmalat USA's bankruptcy lawyer. ''We informed the court we may need additional extensions, but we're working hard to try and meet this deadline.'' Parmalat is using funds from G.E. and Citigroup to pay employees and vendors.
