CINCINNATI MICROWAVE SHARES DOUBLE ON MODEM DEAL

Shares of Cincinnati Microwave Inc. doubled in value yesterday on news it had developed a tiny, inexpensive high-speed wireless modem for use with new packet data networks being built by McCaw Cellular Communications and others. The stock rose $2.625, to $5, in Nasdaq trading. Until yesterday, the stock had attracted little attention on Wall Street. No investment analysts have followed the company, Jacques Robinson, the president of the company, said. The company announced on Tuesday that it had teamed with McCaw to market packet data products and services to corporate data users. The modem, which will sell for less than $300, will allow mobile users to send and receive information on the Cellular Digital Packet Data networks, which are faster than current technology.

PROGRESSIVE'S STOCK JUMPS 13.7% ON EARNINGS

Shares of the Progressive Corporation jumped 13.7 percent yesterday after the personal auto insurer reported a 68 percent surge in its second-quarter earnings from operations. Progressive shares gained $4.50, to $37.375, a high for the year, on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares did not open for trading on the Big Board until after 11 A.M. because of an order imbalance.

BOWATER PLANS TO CUT ANNUAL NEWSPRINT PRODUCTION

Bowater Inc., the largest manufacturer of newsprint in the country, said yesterday that it would cut annual newsprint production by 16 percent because demand remained weak and the business was not profitable. The production cut would lower the total amount of newsprint manufactured in North America by about 1.5 percent, according to a Salomon Brothers analyst, Chip Dillon. The move would also cut excess inventories by about 60 percent, he said. The company, based in Darien, Conn., said it would trim production by 264,500 short tons, to about 1.44 million tons.

AST RESEARCH COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF TANDY DIVISIONS

AST Research Inc. said yesterday that it had completed its purchase of the Tandy Corporation's Grid and personal computer manufacturing divisions for about $160 million. As a result, AST said it planned to take a fourth-quarter pretax charge of $125 million and post a loss for the quarter and the year. Company officials declined to define the size of the loss. AST had been expected to post earnings of 40 cents a share for the fourth quarter ended July 3, and $1.45 a share for the year, according to the Institutional Brokers Estimate System. AST shares were down 87.5 cents, to $15.125, in Nasdaq trading yesterday.

Shares of Paging Network Inc., based in Plano, Tex., rose 8.8 percent yesterday after Prudential Securities Research promoted the stock to its regional brokers on Tuesday. In addition, an analyst at Volpe, Welty & Company, Eric Zimits, upgraded his recommendation on the shares of Paging Network to "buy" from "hold." Shares of Paging Network rose $2.75, to a record high of $34, in Nasdaq trading.

Fed Bank Pick Is Expected

Bad News For Dell Computer

Even as its sales continue to surge, the Dell Computer Corporation provided more evidence today that it was having a terrible year, saying it expected to report its first quarterly loss ever. Dell, which rose from obscurity to become the fourth-largest personal computer maker in America, said it ould have a loss of $1.65 to $1.85 a share for the second fiscal quarter. Analysts had been estimating that Dell would earn an average of 29 cents a share, and the company's announcement sent its stock price skidding.
