Clinton Bristles at Skepticism Over Deals

The White House's continuing frustration over the Whitewater affair came to the surface today when President Clinton bristled at a questioner who compared the shifting accounts of the Clintons' financial investments to his daughter's excuses for not doing her homework. Responding with sarcasm to the question by John Simpson, international editor of USA Today at a convention of newspaper editors, Mr. Clinton said his duties as President had kept him from fully revisiting tax returns and other financial records from years ago.

BASF Research Center

The United States unit of the German chemicals giant BASF A.G. will open a $100 million research and development center on Wednesday in Worcester, Mass. The center, which will employ some 160 scientists, will do research and develop new drugs for the treatment of cancer and diseases affecting immune systems. The company's biotechnological research center in Ludwigshafen will concentrate on treatments for heart disease and diseases of the central nervous system.

MOTOROLA SAYS IT IS SHIPPING LIGHTWEIGHT PHONES

Motorola Inc. said yesterday that it had started shipping lightweight telephones capable of handling cellular, data and wireless communications. Two models of the 15-ounce phones, known as the Lingo line, have already been shipped to Nextel Communications Inc., which is based in Rutherford, N.J., Motorola said. Two more models will be shipped next month. Ed Gams, a spokesman for Motorola, declined to give prices for the phones. Motorola, which is based in Schaumburg, Ill., is focusing on selling equipment for new personal communications services that will also transmit voice and data.

PARTNERSHIP WITH CABLE SYSTEM IS SOUGHT BY MCI

The MCI Communications Corporation said yesterday that it was eager to forge ties with a cable television system operator in a partnership that would enable the companies to send voice and video over the same lines. The chief financial officer of MCI, Douglas L. Maine, said the company had had discussions with several cable companies. Mr. Maine said it was unlikely that MCI would swap equity with a cable television partner. "Never say never, but it's more likely we will reach an agreement with a cable company concerning guaranteed access time over the system," he said.

FIBREBOARD STOCK RISES ON BUYOUT OFFER

The stock of the Fibreboard Corporation jumped by 13 percent yesterday after a group led by Carl Pohlad, the owner of the Minnesota Twins baseball club, raised its cash offer to buy the forest products company to $45 a share, about $187.7 million, from $42.50 a share. The company had 4.17 million shares outstanding as of the third quarter. Shares of Fibreboard rose $4.50, to $37.50, on the American Stock Exchange yesterday, where it had one of the day's best percentage gains. Fibreboard, based in Walnut Creek, Calif., said it planned to respond to the offer within a few days. The company had rejected the earlier offer from Mr. Pohlad, whose group had acquired a 6.8 percent stake in the company last year.

SHARES OF MCDONNELL DOUGLAS RISE ON IRIDIUM REPORTS

The shares of the McDonnell Douglas Corporation rose $3.375 yesterday, to $111.75, amid reports that it would launch satellites for the Iridium mobile phone project. The company will announce a contract with Iridium Inc. at a news conference tomorrow at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a company spokesman, Tom Williams, said. He declined further comment. The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that McDonnell Douglas had won a $400 million contract to launch 40 satellites for Iridium, a project led by Motorola Inc.

EGYPTIAN BOTTLING COMPANY IS ACQUIRED FOR $47 MILLION

A joint venture led by the Pepsi-Cola International unit of Pepsico Inc. has bought the Egyptian Bottling Company, a Pepsi bottler, for $47 million. Pepsi said the joint venture would invest $60 million in the next two years to modernize the bottler's operations, introduce new packages and brands and expand distribution. The venture will operate eight bottling plants now responsible for 45 percent of the Egyptian volume of Pepsi. The company's partners in the venture are the Alkhan Group of Companies, based in Cairo, and Bugshan & Brothers, a Pepsi bottler in Jidda, Saudi Arabia.
